New Tour - The Air War Of The Somme

The Air War Of The Somme

We at Baxters Battlefield Tours like to try and keep our tours a little bit different, and once again we think we have done that with this tour.

6th - 7th April 2019 - £295

Come and join us in April 2019, walking in the footsteps, hearing the personal, heroic stories, visiting the great war aerodromes, standing on sites that gallantry medals were earned, and visiting the resting places of the heroes of the skies. This tour will bring you closer to the men of the Royal Flying Corps or Royal Air Force as it was later known.

Collection points will start in the Surrey area with collections at Cobham and Clacketts lane services scheduled for 04:00 and 04:25. As with all our tours we will be offering collections at Maidstone and Folkstone services, or any hotel in the Dover area for no added cost. Should you wish to join us at any other point then this can be arranged prior to the tour, and we aim to be able to accommodate and collect anyone from any area, so please do not be put off by the collection points!

So after a pleasant journey across the channel via ferry we head straight to the areas used by the RFC / RAF. We start with the story of a VC recipient, Albert Ball. We will visit his crash site and his resting place, all whilst learning more about the man himself on a personal level. We will then move on to the stunning Flying corps memorial at Arras, while here we will discuss the RFC and its history and take in the personal stories of other pilots named on the memorial. After a bite of lunch (Supplied by us) we then head off to the secluded Regina trench cemetery, here we will hear the story of pilots from outside of the UK who came to fight for the allies in the great war. Next stop will be the mighty Thiepval memorial, there are many reasons for visiting here, yet being at the heart of the Somme is as good enough reason as any. We will then move onto Fricourt German cemetery and look at, and learn about the airman of Germany, we will look at the so called "gentlemen of the air agreement" and also its famous "Flying Circus". So after a packed first day we will  then head onto Amiens and our hotel. During the evening you will have the chance to sample the Amiens night life, with street side cafe's and restaurants and relax in one of our favourite French cities.

With a good nights rest we head out after breakfast at 08:30 to the area of Sailly - Laurette, this area is very special to Baxters Battlefield Tours as we have close family that served here, yet it is also the area with an amazing and moving story connected to the RFC. We will then move to the memorial, and hear the moving story of Captain Mond and Lt Martyn, discuss their families reaction and its repercussions. Next up we move to a hot bed of RFC and Imperial German Flying Corps activity, Bertangles. In this area probably the most famous German flying ace finally flew his last mission. We will visit his crash site and the first of his resting places, all whilst looking a little deeper into the man that has had so much written and said about him. In between these two stops we will also visit the site of an aerodrome that was flown out of by yet another VC recipient of the RFC and hear his story whilst standing where he flew out from. Vignacourt cemetery will be our next stop, and here we will look at various stories of just a few more of the pilots that now rest here. Whilst here we will also have a late lunch which will be supplied by us. Our final stop will be the site of another great war aerodrome from which a VC recipient took off for his final mission, never to return.

From here we will head back to Calais for an evening ferry with an estimated arrival at Dover of around 21:00
